My name is Helen Garland and I'm registered with Maitland Five Star Family Day Care, I have provided Family Day Care since 1995, firstly in central Maitland, for around 18 months until I took a break with the birth of my second child, then at my current location from March 2000. My day care environment consists of a play area inside my house, individual sleep areas for babies in cots and an indoor/outdoor playroom, including a designated area for craft with free access for the children, set inside my garage, which opens to my secure play yard.
I have provided day care and early learning to many children, including children with special needs. My service is structured to provide care for babies from 6 weeks to school aged (around 5 years old). There is also activities available for school aged children with before & after care and vacation care. I am a mother to three, grandmother to two and in my past have held jobs as a Nanny, as well as a Secretary/Accounts clerk in debt collection. Our family has two cats, which spend their day in a separated cat run, the cats visit with the children during the day under supervision, during which the children in care are taught to handle the cats with care and proper hygiene practices
I hold my Certificate III in Children's Services as well as a current First Aid certificate with Anaphylaxis and Asthma training. I undertake training in various child care related areas as part of my registration as a Family Day Care educator, including attending conferences to remain as up to date as possible. I also hold a position on the scheme's Management Committee as a representative for the Educators offering my voice and thoughts on matters relating to the scheme.
Family Day Care operates under the Early Years Learning Framework and I offer programs to cater for each individual child's interest and needs, ensuring that each child meets indicators from the Framework. At the end of each year, each child receives a portfolio that includes copies of their artwork, photos of their experiences at day care and short stories about their learning achievements. On my Facebook and Instagram pages, I share our day to day experiences with other educators and interested people. All photos on this page are only placed with written permission from each parent and usually faces of children are not shown. All parents are also invited to access an online update of their child's day to day happenings. This may include photos taken of what the children have been up to.
My service is open from Monday to Friday with each family has its own personal booking times that fit in with their work, study or respite commitments, as well as my own personal & family arrangements. Your child will be in a small group environment with a maximum of four children under school age and at times up to 7 children up to around 13 years or age, I also offer care to school age children before and after school hours as well as during school holidays or pupil free days, My own daughter who will be here before & after school as well as during school holidays is included in the ratio of children.
